Dan Price is living like a real-life hobbit. He lives in an underground hole in Oregon for most than twenty years now. He only spent $5,000 a year and $100 of it goes to his renting expense for the land he resides under. Before, he was a photojournalist to support himself, his wife, and his two kids. But his life change when he read book by Harlan Hubbard. it is a book that states an existence without the everyday commodities of modern life is possible. After reading the book, he then packed his bag and moved to another peaceful meadow. He lived in a cabin, a flophouse and a tepee before he finally settled into his hobbit house.

His house is an 8-foot hole that accommodates all he needs including  a stove, his books, a CD player and some clothes. “Everything is at arm’s length when you are sitting there. It’s human scale. The idea is that you can see everything, no fumbling for stuff – that creates stress”, says price.

Even though he lives primitively, he still has an electricity at his home and even has a phone and a MacBook Air. He makes a living by sketching the  Moonlight Chronicles magazine that cost $5 per issue. He also sketches a book about a hobbit lifestyle called “My Tiny House”. “I used to work as a photojournalist with regular crazy hours. The problem is, people have their lives organized so they are the slaves. Basically, the average person spends a ton of their time working for very little money, just to survive. I spend a very little of my time working for enough money to not just survive, but do what I love – draw and travel,” says Price.
